
How to Shut Off Water Before Damage Spreads

A supply line can burst behind a toilet, a washing machine hose can fail, or a pipe can crack during a Wisconsin freeze. In those first minutes, knowing how to shut off water can limit the damage to one area instead of allowing water to spread through floors, walls, insulation, and electrical systems.

Look behind or beside the toilet near the floor. You should find a small oval handle or lever attached to the water line. Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops. If it is a lever-style quarter-turn valve, rotate it so the handle sits perpendicular to the pipe.
After closing the valve, flush once to empty the tank as much as possible. If the toilet is overflowing, remove the tank lid and lift the float or flapper to stop water from entering while you close the shutoff valve. Do not force an old valve that will not turn. A damaged valve can create another leak.
Sink shutoff valves
Under a bathroom or kitchen sink, there are usually two valves: one for hot water and one for cold water. Close the valve connected to the leaking supply line. If you cannot identify the source or water continues to flow, close both valves.
Open the faucet after shutting off the valves to relieve pressure and drain the remaining water from the lines. Place a bucket or towels underneath, because water left in the faucet and supply hoses will still drain out.
Dishwasher, refrigerator, and washing machine valves
A dishwasher is typically supplied by a valve under the kitchen sink. A refrigerator ice maker line may have a small valve behind the refrigerator, under the sink, in a basement ceiling, or near the water line connection. Washing machine valves are usually mounted in a recessed box on the wall behind the machine.
For a washing machine leak, turn both hot and cold valves clockwise. If the valves are difficult to reach and water is flowing rapidly, do not spend time moving a heavy appliance. Shut off the main water supply instead.
Find and Shut Off Your Main Water Valve
Every homeowner, landlord, and property manager should locate the main water shutoff valve before an emergency happens. The main valve stops water from entering the building from the municipal supply. It will not instantly remove water already in pipes, but it will stop additional water from feeding a broken pipe or failed connection.
In many Wisconsin homes, the main shutoff is in the basement, crawl space, utility room, mechanical room, or near the water meter. Look along the wall where the main water line enters the structure. In older homes, it may be close to the water heater or laundry area.

If water is actively pouring into the property and you cannot shut it off inside, the curb stop or exterior meter shutoff may be an option. After You Shut Off the Water
Stopping the source is the first win, but it is not the end of the response. Water can keep moving through flooring, drywall, cabinets, insulation, and subfloors long after the visible flow has stopped. Start by documenting the source and affected areas with photos or video. This can help with insurance reporting and professional assessment. If safe, remove standing water with towels, a mop, or a wet vacuum. Lift wet rugs and move furniture away from damp flooring. Do not use a standard household vacuum on water, and do not run HVAC equipment if the system may have been exposed to contaminated water.
Increase airflow only when the water is clean and the electrical area is safe. Fans can help dry minor surface moisture, but they are not a substitute for moisture inspection after a substantial leak.
